Pitt Honors College students Elizabeth Oczpok, a junior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology in the School of Arts and Sciences, and Andrew Savinov, a sophomore majoring in chemistry and molecular biology in Arts and Sciences, have been named 2009 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship winners for their exceptional independent research in the natural sciences. Pitt undergraduates have won a total of 41 Goldwater Scholarships.

David Y. Miller, a professor and director of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs' (GSPIA) Innovation Clinic in the University of Pittsburgh, has been appointed the inaugural director of the University's Dick Thornburgh Forum for Law and Public Policy.

Pitt has received two grants totaling $850,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The first grant, for $750,000, will support the University of Pittsburgh Press for a book publishing initiative undertaken in partnership with Pitt’s Department of History and Philosophy of Science and the history department’s World History Center. The second grant, for $100,000, will benefit the Summer Institutes on Graduate Study in Information Sciences, an annual program administered by Pitt’s School of Information Sciences (iSchool) to recruit graduate students and faculty members from underrepresented groups to the field of information sciences.
