Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg and Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell were among those who paid tribute to Cappy, a Pitt alumnus, during a May 5 public memorial service in Heinz Chapel.

After earning two academic degrees at Pitt, Ralph J. Cappy crafted a distinguished career that included service as Pennsylvania's Chief Justice. "But in a very real sense, Ralph never left this campus," Nordenberg recalled. "Pitt was in his heart; he believed in its mission; and he supported the University in a broad range of ways and over the course of many years."

The AAAS aims to elect as members the finest minds and most influential leaders from each generation, beginning with George Washington and Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century.
