Luketich, Schauer Featured in U.S. News & World Report’s Hospital Rankings

James D. Luketich, M.D., and Philip R. Schauer, M.D., codirectors of the Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsch Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at UPMC Health System, are featured in a U.S. News & World Report special edition, which, for the third consecutive year, placed UPMC Health System on America’s Best Hospitals Honor Roll. UPMC remains the only Pittsburgh-based health system ever to receive this distinction.

The comments of Luketich, associate professor of surgery at the University, and Schauer, assistant professor of surgery at Pitt, appear in the issue of the magazine dated today.

According to U. S. News & World Report, the honor roll recognizes those institutions that perform at a very high level across many specialties. UPMC Health System hospitals placed 16th out of 1,878 eligible hospitals in the United States. UPMC Presbyterian placed in 11 specialty areas and UPMC’s Magee-Womens Hospital was ranked 13th in gynecology.

UPMC has seen a consistent rise in its ranking since 1996, when it first became a unified health system. That year, the system was only ranked in four categories. This year, it is recognized in 12 areas, including ear, nose, and throat; psychiatry; digestive disorders; gynecology; orthopedics; cancer; kidney disease; rheumatology; respiratory disorders; cardiology; hormonal disorders, which includes diabetes and other glandular conditions; and geriatrics.
