Community Outreach

At the College of General Studies’ Computer Learning Center, instructor Joan Harsch, center, assists Lucille Kennedy, left, and Crystal Hall in a desktop publishing course for their community-based newspaper, Hazelwood Homepage. Board members of the Hazelwood Initiative, a citizens’ association of the Hazelwood communities, Kennedy and Hall attended a two-day computer class through Pitt’s Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC), which helps community organizations build their capabilities to better serve their neighborhoods. Others from the Hazelwood Initiative attending the program included fellow board member Rose Belgich and Pitt English major Eric Slagle, who is serving an internship on the newspaper. The classes were arranged by the computer center’s director, Carla Deppermam, and COPC codirector, Tracy Soska, of Pitt’s School of Social Work.
