Summer Research

Last week, Pitt’s Department of Biological Sciences hosted a biology research camp for students from 14 area high schools. The camp, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program, gives students hands-on experience in biological research in the Pitt biology labs, as well as field trips to pathology and pediatrics laboratories at Pitt and to the Bone Tissue Engineering Center. Top, from left, students Mayada Mansour, Carl Jay, and Terrance Suber examine a fluorescent gene they implanted in an E. coli bacterium. Middle, program director Douglas Chew examines a sample while students Cherie Dhar, center, and Shalini Dave work on their projects. Bottom, Daile Flurry, left, and Alicia Roberts view cells through microscopes.
