Transmission Transition

Local inventor Joseph Lane shows off a prototype of a bicycle transmission that Pitt’s School of Engineering produced. Working with the Manufacturing Assistance Center (MAC), the Swanson Center for Product Innovation, and Bucknell’s Small Business Development Center, Pitt hopes to help bring Lane’s patented design to reality. Lane’s PowerShift transmission, using pins instead of sprockets to interface with the chain that propels the bicycle, is an innovative alternative to the sprocket-derailleur transmission system found on most bicycles today.
