Poised for Greatness Using past academic performance as a benchmark, Pitt expects great things from the Class of 2006. The University has put a great deal of effort into recruiting not only a high-quality student body but also a diverse one, and the incoming freshman class is no exception. Underrepresented minorities make up 18 percent of the Class of 2006, with 12 percent African American. Adding to the diversity of the Class of 2006 is the largest number of out-of-state students in Pitts history. The classs diversity also is reflected in the distribution of students throughout Pitts schools and colleges. Seventy-five percent of incoming freshmen have chosen fields of study within the College of Arts and Sciences, the heart and soul of Pitts academic community. Thirteen percent have enrolled in the School of Engineering and will continue the tradition of Pitt engineers who, through technological innovation and the promise of bioengineering and computer engineering, have helped reshape the city of Pittsburgh and its economy. Three percent have chosen to study nursing, attracted undoubtedly by the preeminence of Pitts health care programs and its ties to the UPMC Health System. Nine percent will join the community of leaders developed in the College of Business Administration. Given their past academic prowess and the top-notch resources now at their disposal, members of the Class of 2006 are poised for greatness, and Pitt is proud to be fueling their ambitions, according to Porter. Note: The preceding profile is based on data compiled as of Aug. 9, 2002, by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. The final profile of the Class of 2006 will be available in September.
