What, The Fair Ophelia!

Doug Mertz, left, and Kathryn Spitz perform the burial of Ophelia scene from Hamlet, playing the roles of Hamlet, Laertes, and Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother. Mertz and Spitz, both teaching artists-in-residence in the Pitt Department of Theatre Arts, performed the play recently in a dress rehearsal for the Pitt Department of Theatre Arts Shakespeare-in-the-Schools program, in the Henry Heymann Theatre in the Stephen Foster Memorial. In the production, the two actors play all of Hamlet’s main roles in an adaptation that uses masks to identify the characters. The Shakespeare-in-the-Schools production is touring secondary schools in Southwestern Pennsylvania through April.
