• Pitt Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Robert Hill was the keynote speaker June 27 at a Central Baptist Church’s scholarship event honoring 12 graduating high school seniors who are members of the Pittsburgh Hill District church. Honorees included TaRhonda Brown, daughter of Ron Brown, director of the Academic Support Center in Pitt’s School of Arts and Sciences, and Richard Dickerson, son of Pitt Associate Registrar Madalyn Turner Dickerson, (CAS ’70, EDUC ’75, GSPIA ’85, EDUC ’97).

Cochairs of the church’s scholarship committee were Pitt Friend Cecelia Griffin Golden, president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the YWCA, and Camille Ragin, postdoctoral fellow in Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

Ana Guzman, associate vice chancellor for Facilities Management, received a Distinguished Service Award at the yearly Conference of the Association of University Architects (AUA) that took place in Rhode Island in June. Guzman also was appointed a Fellow of the Association, which is made up of the senior architects in the facilities organizations of universities throughout the United States. Guzman was the first woman professional member of the association and also its first female president.

Timothy Thompson, assistant director for admissions in the Pitt Office of International Services, attended a June meeting in Berlin of the Fulbright Commission in Germany, along with representatives of the German Rectors Conference for university presidents and other German education officials.

The participants discussed the changes to German degree structures initiated in 1999 by the signing of the Bologna Declaration, which is having a significant impact on education in Europe. The declaration was signed by 48 European ministers of education. Thompson’s attendance is in recognition of Pitt’s role in monitoring changes in Europe. He is incoming chair of the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Academic Credentials (CEC). The CEC will be reviewing the changes in Europe to provide guidance to institutions in the United States as they evaluate applications for admission to their degree programs.
