Pitt to mark 50th anniversary of Salk vaccine with tribute to local community, scientific symposium: Pittsburghers line up for vaccinations in the Cathedral of Learning Commons Room on Feb. 26, 1957. During a free public April 10 “Tribute to Pittsburgh’s Own Polio Pioneers,” people who were inoculated in the 1950s pilot trials of the Salk vaccine will gather in the Commons Room with polio survivors, medical professionals, lab staff, caregivers, and volunteers who helped in the fight against polio.
