Global Studies Program Accepting Applications
For 2006 Global Academic Partnership Grants

November 14, 2005 Issue

By Leigh Ann Wojciechowski

Jan. 31, 2006, is the deadline for submitting applications for 2006 Global Academic Partnership (GAP) grants. The competition—sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and Pitt’s Office of the Provost, University Center for International Studies, and International Business Center of the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business—is designed to strengthen interdisciplinary research on and curriculum development in global themes at Pitt.

The interdisciplinary dimension of the competition is defined as research proposals submitted by candidates from at least two Pitt schools or regional campuses (or departments, in the case of the School of Arts and Sciences [A&S]). To fulfill the international requirement of the competition, projects must relate to one of the six teaching and research foci of the Global Studies Program: sustainable development; global economy and global governance; changing identities in a global world; communication, technology, and society; conflict and conflict resolution; and global health. In addition, conferences and workshops should include international participants. Research involving international scholars from foreign institutions and proposals that involve support for student researchers in foreign exchanges with partner institutions are encouraged.

In addition to having an interdisciplinary and international focus, the competition supports research conferences or workshops at Pitt that include participants from at least two foreign partner institutions and result in publications and curricular enhancements.

Four grants totaling $85,000 will be awarded. Two grants of $20,000 each will be awarded by the Office of the Provost to projects on any of the six research and teaching foci led by faculty from within A&S. One grant of $20,000 will be awarded by the International Business Center to a project on the global economy or international business led by a faculty member based in the Katz School. A $25,000 grant will be awarded to a project on this year’s special topic, states at risk. This project will focus on developing and disseminating new knowledge and concrete outcomes of immediate relevance and applicability for both practitioners and academics working on the pressing issues related to states at risk, in which weak, failing, and failed states deprive populations of basic security (i.e. sustenance, physical safety, education, and health care.) Lead faculty and coapplicants from any school, faculty, or regional campus of the University are eligible for the $25,000 grant, which is sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Applicants must submit three copies of a completed application form, available online, and a proposal narrative of not more than five pages to Global Studies, 4100 Posvar Hall, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
