Memorial Services Scheduled for Edward Curtiss, Katherine Detre

April 17, 2006 Issue

Edward I. Curtiss A memorial service for Edward I. Curtiss, professor and senior associate dean for admissions and financial aid in Pitt’s School of Medicine, will be held at 3 p.m. May 2 in auditorium 6 of Scaife Hall. A reception will follow in Scaife Hall’s Conference Room 1105.

Curtiss, 67, a cardiologist who was an advocate for admission of nontraditional students into the medical school, died of a heart attack Feb. 15.

To contribute to a scholarship fund established in Curtiss’ honor, send a check, payable to the University of Pittsburgh, to: Office of Institutional Advancement, 200 S. Craig St., Pittsburgh, PA. 15260. Include a note indicating that the gift is for the Edward Curtiss, M.D., Memorial Scholarship in the School of Medicine. Katherine M. Detre A memorial service honoring Katherine M. Detre, one of the nation’s leading epidemiologists and Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology in Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), will be held at 2:30 p.m. April 28 in Heinz Memorial Chapel. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Hall of Architecture at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.

Detre, 79, died Jan. 24 of complications from liver cancer. She was known particularly for leading large-scale studies investigating cardiovascular disease. She continued to be scientifically active until the last few weeks of her life, leading GSPH’s Epidemiology Data Center, an organization that she founded in 1980. The center has coordinated the design, data management, and statistical analysis activities for more than 60 medical research projects.
