All in All, It's Not Just Another Wall
July 24, 2006 Issue

A Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker commemorating Forbes Field (1909-1972) was dedicated July 7 across Roberto Clemente Drive from Pitt’s Posvar Hall. The marker stands at the site of the wall where Pirate Bill Mazeroski hit a game-seven-winning home run to beat the New York Yankees in the 1960 World Series. Forbes Field is also remembered as the park where, in 1935, Babe Ruth hit his last three home runs. The Pirates played there from 1909 until 1970, when they moved to Three River Stadium. Forbes Field also hosted Pitt Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers football games and Negro League baseball games, among other events. A commemorative youth baseball game (at left) followed the July 7 dedication ceremony.
