A New Home for College of General Studies

Issue Date:
December 8, 2014

The College of General Studies (CGS) is now located closer to home—the historic Forbes Field home plate, that is.

The move from the Cathedral of Learning to Posvar is intended to increase the visibility of, and access to, CGS, better showcasing the college’s essential contributions to Pitt and the broader community.

CGS and its associated units—the McCarl Center, the Office of Veterans Services, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute—have moved to new signature space on the first floor of Wesley W. Posvar Hall, close to the iconic baseball relic.

The move from the Cathedral of Learning to Posvar Hall, which was completed during summer 2014, is intended to increase the visibility of, and access to, CGS and its units, better showcasing the college’s essential contributions to Pitt and the broader community.

The offices’ new location provides CGS students with improved access to the University’s academic resources; to CGS staff in key areas such as advising, academic affairs, enrollment management, and student support; amenities such as parking and libraries; and designated spaces for tutoring, quiet study, and lounges.

The updated space features a computer café in the glass-walled modern lobby area, a quiet study room, a tutoring room, a student lounge and kitchen, offices for key student support staff, and direct access to an outdoor courtyard.

To showcase the new offices and welcome students, alumni, and the entire Pitt community, CGS held several events and an open house this fall. In September, Pitt trustee F. James McCarl (CGS ’73), his family and friends, and key University leaders, including Chancellor Patrick Gallagher and Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Patricia Beeson, attended a rededication of the McCarl Center and an open house to tour the new space.
