Brown Jr. (right), a captain and pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces’ Tuskegee Airmen fighter group during World War II, delivered a March 4 lecture, “Tuskegee Airmen: A Model for Excellence,” in the William Pitt Union’s Kurtzman Room. Brown is seen standing with fellow Tuskeegee Airman Wendell Freeland, a Pittsburgh attorney and civil rights activist. Freeland is also a former Pitt trustee and a member of the School of Social Work Board of Visitors. The lecture was part of this year’s Black History Month celebration.Roscoe C. Pitt Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg (center) was the master of ceremonies for a Feb. 22 luncheon hosted by the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany. During the event, His Excellency Dr. Horst Freitag (left), the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in New York, presented David A. Murdoch (right) with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on behalf of German President Horst Koehler. Murdoch is the German Honorary Consul in Pittsburgh, a partner with law firm K&L Gates, and chair of the World Affairs Council’s board of directors. He was selected for the award because of his contributions to German-American relations. The award is the highest civilian tribute that the German government bestows upon an individual. Flake (A&S ’78) gave a talk and signed copies of her new book, You Don’t Even Know Me (Jump at the Sun/Hyperion, 2010), during a Feb. 22 event in Bellefield Hall Auditorium.
