A Farewell to Officer Riggs
Officer Riggs, one of Pitt’s beloved canine cops, retired Jan. 22, after working for 9 ½ years at the University alongside his human partner, Pitt Police Sgt. Dave Nanz. The police dog’s skills include bomb sniffing, and he played an instrumental role during a series of campus bomb threats in 2012. Throughout his Pitt career, Riggs also performed bomb-sniffing duties at other community locations when needed. Joining the force early this month will be Officer Sam, a German short-haired pointer, who is 18 months old. He, too, will partner with Sgt. Nanz. As for Riggs, he is living permanently with the Nanz family—and will always have a place at Sgt. Nanz’ side. (Photo by Emily O'Donnell)
